How to Convert Images — Step by Step

  1. Select your images using the file picker or drop them into the upload area.
  2. Choose the output format: JPEG, PNG, or WebP, using the selector above the convert button.
  3. Click Convert All. Each image is re-encoded to the selected format in your browser.
  4. Download individual converted images or click Download All to save everything at once.

Understanding Output Formats

JPEG

Best for photographs and complex images. JPEG uses lossy compression to create small file sizes, but does not support transparency. Repeated re-saving degrades quality over time.

PNG

Best for graphics, logos, screenshots, and images that need transparency. PNG uses lossless compression, so quality is never lost, but file sizes are larger for photographic content.

WebP

Best for modern websites. WebP supports both lossy and lossless compression, plus transparency. It outperforms JPEG in file size at the same quality and matches PNG for lossless needs.

Why Convert Image Formats?

  • Compatibility: Some software, devices, or websites only accept certain formats. Converting BMP or ICO images to JPEG ensures universal viewing.
  • Web Performance: Converting to WebP or JPEG can dramatically reduce page load times and bandwidth consumption compared to PNG or uncompressed formats.
  • Archival: Converting between formats helps future-proof your image library. PNG is excellent for long-term lossless storage, while JPEG is space-efficient for photo collections.

About Image Format Conversion

Image format conversion changes an image from one format to another while preserving the visual content. Different formats serve different purposes: JPEG works best for photos, PNG for graphics with transparency, and WebP for modern web performance.

This tool runs entirely in your browser using the Canvas API. Your images are never uploaded. All conversion happens locally. No data is transmitted, stored, or shared.

When you convert to JPEG, the image is flattened to a solid background (white by default for transparent areas). PNG preserves transparency. WebP supports both lossy compression and transparency, making it a versatile choice for web use.

Privacy & Security

All image conversion happens locally in your browser using the Canvas API. Your files are never uploaded, transmitted, or stored on any server. There is no data collection, no tracking, and no third-party access. Once you close the page, all processed data is gone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I lose quality when converting between formats?
Converting from a lossless format (PNG, WebP lossless) to a lossy format (JPEG, WebP lossy) will reduce quality. Converting between lossy formats (JPEG to WebP) may preserve quality at similar compression levels. Converting to PNG is lossless. The image data stays identical.
Does converting to PNG add transparency?
No. If the original image has no transparency (e.g., a JPEG), converting to PNG will not create transparency. The background remains opaque. Only images that already have an alpha channel, such as PNG or WebP with transparency, retain it after conversion.
Why would I convert to WebP instead of JPEG?
WebP typically produces files 25-35% smaller than JPEG at equivalent visual quality. It also supports transparency and animation. Modern browsers all support WebP, making it an excellent choice for websites that want faster load times and lower bandwidth usage.
Is my data safe when using this converter?
Yes. All processing happens in your browser using client-side JavaScript. Your images never leave your device. No uploads, no server storage, no third-party access. Once you close the page, nothing remains.
Can I convert multiple images at once?
Yes. You can upload up to 20 images at a time via drag-and-drop or the file picker. All images are converted to your chosen output format in a single click. Each result can be downloaded individually, or you can download all at once.
