What this metronome offers

This metronome gives you complete timing control in your browser. Set BPM 10 to 300 with slider, number input, minus and plus, tap tempo and one-click Largo, Andante, Moderato, Allegro and Presto presets. Choose time signatures 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/8 and 7/8, and subdivisions Quarter, 8th, Triplet, 16th, Quintuplet and Sextuplet with Swing 0 to 75 percent.

How to use

  1. Drag the BPM slider or type a value (10 to 300) and press Play. Use minus and plus for 1 BPM steps or click Largo, Andante, Moderato, Allegro and Presto presets.
  2. Tap the Tap Tempo pad 3 to 4 times to set BPM from your tapping, or use the BPM number input.
  3. Choose time signature (beats per bar), subdivision Quarter to Sextuplet with Swing, and tap the accent pattern to set per-beat Strong, Normal or Mute. The first beat is accented by default.
  4. Adjust volume, enable silent bars or speed trainer in Advanced Settings, set a timer, and use Space to play or pause. Presets and WAV export are at the bottom.

What is a metronome?

A metronome produces a steady pulse at a set tempo measured in BPM (beats per minute). Musicians use it to practice timing, build speed gradually and keep consistent tempo.

This metronome runs 100 percent in your browser with the Web Audio API. No install, no upload and no tracking. Works offline once loaded.

A metronome marks time in bars: the top number of the time signature is beats per bar and the first beat is accented so you never lose the downbeat. Subdivisions fill the space between beats for slow practice, swing delays the offbeat for shuffle feel, and silent bars test whether you hold tempo without the click.

At 60 BPM you hear one beat per second, at 120 BPM two beats per second. Most pop songs sit between 90–130 BPM, ballads 60–80 BPM and fast dance tracks 120–150 BPM. Understanding this grid helps you lock in with drums, bass and other musicians.

Understanding BPM and Tempo

BPM (beats per minute) is the standard way to measure tempo. It counts how many quarter-note beats occur in one minute. Lower BPM feels slower and more relaxed, higher BPM feels faster and more energetic. This metronome covers 10 to 300 BPM for slow practice to extreme speeds.

Common tempo markings: Largo (40–60), Adagio (60–76), Andante (76–108), Moderato (108–120), Allegro (120–156), Vivace (156–176), Presto (176–200) — Prestissimo (200+). Use the slider or one-click Largo to Presto presets below it to explore these ranges, or enable speed trainer in Advanced Settings to auto increase BPM every few bars.

Pro tip: Tap tempo along with a song you like, then read the BPM. It is the fastest way to learn what 100 versus 140 BPM feels like.

Time Signatures Explained

2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4

The top number is beats per bar, the bottom is the note value. 4/4 (common time) has four quarter-note beats with accent on beat 1. 3/4 (waltz) has three beats, 2/4 has two. 5/4 is used in jazz (Take Five) — accent stays on 1.

6/8 and 7/8

6/8 feels like two big beats subdivided into three (triplet feel). 7/8 is 7 eighth-notes, often grouped 2+2+3 or 3+2+2 — dancers count it as 3 beats with uneven length. Try 6/8 at 80 BPM to feel the compound pulse.

Subdivisions: Why They Matter

Quarter notes play only the main beats. 8th notes divide each beat in two, Triplets in three for swing and compound time, 16th in four for fast passages, and Quintuplet/Sextuplet for advanced rhythms. Swing 0 to 75 percent delays the offbeat for shuffle feel. The metronome clicks on every subdivision when selected, but the visual dots still show only main beats so you stay oriented. Tips for practice

Start slow

Begin 10–15 BPM below target, play cleanly, then increase by 2–5 BPM.

Subdivide

Use 8th notes, triplets, 16ths, quintuplets or sextuplets and add swing to internalize faster passages.

FAQ

What BPM range is supported?
10 to 300 BPM, which covers slow practice at 40 BPM (one beat every 1.5 seconds) up to extreme 200 BPM plus drills. Use the slider for quick moves, the number input or minus and plus for exact values, Tap Tempo to match a song, or one-click Largo (50), Andante (92), Moderato (114), Allegro (144) and Presto (184) presets. 60 BPM is exactly one beat per second and 120 BPM is two per second.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Clicks are synthesized live with the Web Audio API using a lookahead scheduler, so no audio files are needed. After the page loads once, timing stays sample-accurate offline. Keep the tab audible and in the foreground, because background tabs on some phones throttle timers.
Can I use it on mobile?
Yes, on phones, tablets and desktops with no install. Beats, subdivisions and sounds stack vertically on small screens for thumb reach. Keep volume up, screen awake, and prefer wired headphones, because Bluetooth adds latency between the scheduled click and what you hear.
What is Tap Tempo?
Tap the pad in rhythm at least 4 times and the metronome averages your tap intervals (60,000 divided by average ms) and sets BPM automatically. It is the fastest way to match a song playing nearby, then the bar, dots and accent grid follow the detected tempo.
How do subdivisions and swing work?
Subdivisions split each beat: Quarter plays the pulse, 8th adds 2 clicks per beat, Triplet 3, 16th 4, Quintuplet 5 and Sextuplet 6. Swing from 0 to 75 percent delays every second 8th note for shuffle feel in jazz and blues. Triplets already swing, so swing applies to 8th notes only. Dots still show main beats so you stay oriented.
What are silent bars and speed trainer?
Silent bars mute a set number of bars per cycle while dots and the bar counter keep running, so you learn to hold tempo without leaning on the click. Speed trainer raises BPM by your chosen step every few bars until your target tempo, which is the standard way to build speed without rehearsing mistakes.
