About
Grade Point Average (GPA) is a standard measure of academic achievement used by schools and universities worldwide. It represents the average of your grades weighted by course credits. A higher GPA reflects stronger academic performance and can affect scholarship eligibility, graduate school admissions, and job applications.
How to Use
Enter each course name, the number of credits (weight), and select the letter grade you received.
Click Add Course to include more courses. The calculator instantly updates your semester GPA and total credits on the right panel.
How GPA Is Calculated
GPA is the weighted average of your grades. Each letter grade converts to a numerical grade point (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, etc.). Multiply each course's grade points by its credits, sum them up, then divide by the total credits.
Formula: GPA = Σ(Credits × Grade Points) ÷ Σ(Credits)
Grade Scale
Each letter grade corresponds to a numerical grade point value used in the calculation:
| Grade | Grade Points |
|---|---|
| A+ | 4.0 |
| A | 4.0 |
| A- | 3.7 |
| B+ | 3.3 |
| B | 3.0 |
| B- | 2.7 |
| C+ | 2.3 |
| C | 2.0 |
| C- | 1.7 |
| D+ | 1.3 |
| D | 1.0 |
| D- | 0.7 |
| F | 0.0 |
Examples
Balanced Semester
A student takes Math (4 credits, A), Physics (3 credits, B+), and English (3 credits, A-). Math contributes 4 × 4.0 = 16.0 points, Physics contributes 3 × 3.3 = 9.9 points, and English contributes 3 × 3.7 = 11.1 points. Total points = 37.0, total credits = 10. The GPA is 3.70.
Heavy Credit Load
A science major takes Biology (4 credits, A-), Chemistry (4 credits, B), Lab (1 credit, A+), and Calculus (3 credits, B+). The higher-credit courses have more influence on the final GPA. Weighted properly, the result is 3.39.
Graduation Requirement
An engineering student needs a minimum 3.0 GPA to graduate. After six courses worth 18 credits, they earned 58.5 grade points. Dividing 58.5 by 18 gives a GPA of 3.25, comfortably above the threshold.
