A grade calculator helps you calculate your current course grade from assignment scores and their weights. You can also use it to determine what score you need on a final exam to reach a target grade. Most courses use a weighted grading system where different assessments — homework, quizzes, midterms, and finals — contribute different percentages to the final grade. Understanding your current standing helps you prioritize study time and set realistic targets for remaining work.
How to Use the Calculator
Select either Weighted Average to compute your overall course grade from individual assignments, or Final Grade Needed to determine what score you must earn on your final exam.
In weighted mode, enter each assignment name, your percentage score, and how much it counts toward the final grade. The overall grade updates instantly.
How to Calculate a Weighted Grade
A weighted grade is the sum of each assignment's score multiplied by its weight, divided by the total weight assigned. Follow these three steps:
- Convert each score to a percentage.
- Multiply each score by its assignment weight.
- Add the weighted scores and divide by the total weight.
Weighted Grade = (Score₁ × Weight₁ + Score₂ × Weight₂ + …) ÷ (Weight₁ + Weight₂ + …)
For example, if you scored 88% on homework (20% weight) and 74% on the midterm (30% weight), the calculation would be: (88 × 0.20 + 74 × 0.30) ÷ (0.20 + 0.30) = 79.6%.
To find the required final exam grade, use: Required = (Desired − Current × (1 − Final Weight)) ÷ Final Weight
How to Find Your Current Grade
Enter each assignment, score, and weight into the calculator. The calculator multiplies each score by its weight and combines the weighted values to calculate your current course grade.
For example, if homework is worth 20% and you score 85%, its contribution is 17 percentage points. Repeat this for each graded component to calculate your overall weighted grade.
How to Calculate the Grade You Need on Your Final
If you know your current grade, the percentage of your course represented by the final exam, and your desired final grade, you can calculate the minimum score needed on the final.
Required Final Grade = [Desired Grade − Current Grade × (1 − Final Weight)] ÷ Final Weight
- Desired Grade: the overall course grade you want to earn.
- Current Grade: your current weighted grade based on completed coursework.
- Final Weight: the percentage of the course that the final exam is worth (e.g., 30 means 30%).
For example, if your current grade is 82%, the final is worth 25% of the course, and you want to finish with a 90%, the required final grade is: (90 − 82 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = (90 − 61.5) ÷ 0.25 = 114%. This means a 90% is not possible — you would need to adjust your target or seek extra credit.

Examples
Course With Weighted Components
A student has three graded items: Homework (score 88%, weight 20%), Midterm Exam (score 74%, weight 30%), and Final Project (score 91%, weight 50%). The weighted contribution of homework is 88 × 20 = 1,760, midterm is 74 × 30 = 2,220, and the project is 91 × 50 = 4,550. Summing these gives 8,530. Dividing by total weight 100 yields an overall course grade of 85.30%.
What-If Final Exam Scenario
A student has a current grade of 67% in a course. The final exam is worth 25% of the total grade, and the student wants to finish with a 75%. Using the formula: Required = (75 − 67 × (1 − 0.25)) ÷ 0.25 = (75 − 50.25) ÷ 0.25 = 24.75 ÷ 0.25. The student needs to score at least 99% on the final exam to reach a 75% course grade.
Multiple Small Assignments
A language course has 5 quizzes (each worth 5%, total 25%), a speaking test (15%), a writing assignment (20%), a midterm (15%), and a final exam (25%). The student scores 82, 79, 91, 88, 76 on quizzes (average weighted by their individual weights), 84 on the speaking test, 78 on writing, 88 on the midterm, and aims for at least 80% overall. The completed components total 75% of the grade and yield a weighted average of 82.93%. To reach 80% overall, the student needs at least 71.2% on the final exam — an easily achievable target.
