What is Ideal Body Weight?

There is no single universally accepted IBW value. Published formulas — such as Hamwi, Devine, Robinson, and Miller — use different constants and can produce noticeably different estimates, and they aren't consistent across heights. This calculator shows multiple estimates side by side so you can see how the formulas compare.

Today, IBW is widely used in sports, fitness, and clinical settings as a quick reference. However, it only factors in height and sex — it does not account for muscle mass, bone density, body composition, or individual health conditions.

IBW should be viewed as a general guideline rather than a strict target. A person can be healthy at a weight above or below their IBW depending on their muscle mass, activity level, and overall health. Focus on balanced nutrition, regular exercise, and sustainable habits rather than chasing a specific number.

Factors That Affect Ideal Weight

Several factors influence what constitutes an ideal weight for an individual:

  • Height: Taller individuals generally have higher body weights because larger bodies have greater overall mass. IBW formulas scale with height above 5 feet.
  • Sex: These formulas use different reference values for males and females.
  • Age: Not an input here; classic IBW formulas are age-blind. Age effects on body composition are better captured by body-fat percentage tools than by weight targets.
  • Body Frame Size: Not an input here, but worth knowing: larger-framed individuals naturally weigh more at the same height. This tool does not adjust for frame size.
  • Muscle Mass: Highly muscular individuals may weigh significantly above their IBW while being perfectly healthy. IBW does not distinguish between fat and muscle mass.

Should I use IBW or BMI to determine a healthy weight?
