What is Key Finder?

The tool decodes your file, measures energy in each of the twelve pitch classes over time, and compares the profile against major and minor templates.

Camelot codes map keys to a wheel. Adjacent codes mix well: same code, plus or minus one, or the relative major or minor.

A result like 8A A minor means your track centers on A with natural minor colors. Its relative C major shares the same notes, and neighbors 7A, 9A and 8B on the wheel mix cleanly, so plan transitions within that family and confirm by playing the scale over your track.

Which audio files work for key detection?
MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG and FLAC your browser can decode, up to about 50 MB. The first 60 seconds are analyzed, so use a harmonically rich chorus rather than a drums-only intro or silence for the strongest chroma signal.
How accurate is automatic key detection?
Strong on tonal pop, rock, house and hip-hop with clear harmony. Atonal passages, heavy chromaticism, key changes mid-song, or ambiguous relative major and minor splits lower confidence. High means the winning profile clearly beat 23 alternatives, low means play the suggested scale over your track to confirm.
What is the Camelot wheel?
A 1A to 12B DJ map of the 24 keys where A is minor and B is major. Same code, plus or minus one, or the relative pair mix without clashes. For example 8A A minor blends with 7A, 9A and 8B. The tool lists all four compatible codes for your result.
Is my audio uploaded anywhere?
No. Files decode via Web Audio and the 4096-point FFT chromagram plus Krumhansl-Schmuckler matching run locally. Clearing the file revokes the object URL and nothing is stored or sent.
What are compatible keys and relative major or minor?
Relative pairs share the same notes, like A minor and C major, and are the most common alternative when detection wavers. Compatible neighbors (same code, adjacent numbers, relative) share most pitches, so harmonic mixes stay smooth. Start with the same Camelot code, then try neighbors.
Should I use Key Finder or BPM Finder?
Use both for full track prep: BPM Finder gives tempo and beat grid, Key Finder gives key and Camelot. Together they answer what DJs need to plan transitions, which is tempo plus harmonic compatibility. Both run on the same file without uploads.
