What is a time signature?

Two stacked numbers that define a bar. The top number counts beats per bar and the bottom number names the note value that gets one beat: 2 is half, 4 is quarter, 8 is eighth.

Simple meters like 4/4 divide beats in two, compound meters like 6/8 group them in threes, and odd meters like 5/4 or 7/8 mix groupings such as 2 plus 2 plus 3.

At 120 BPM a 4/4 bar is 2 seconds while a 3/4 bar is 1.5 seconds, even though the beat is the same 500 ms. That is why video cuts and loop lengths change with meter at identical tempo.

Tips

Count first

Tap your foot and count out loud. If 4 never lands, try 3, then odd meters.

Feel compound in two

Count 6/8 as two big beats of three, not six clicks, to groove correctly.

Plan loops by bars

Multiply bar seconds by bar count for exact loop, video and arrangement lengths.

FAQ

What do the two numbers mean?
Top is beats per bar, bottom is the note value of one beat. 3/4 holds three quarter notes, 6/8 holds six eighth notes felt as two groups of three.
What is the difference from the BPM Calculator?
The BPM Calculator converts one tempo and meter deeply with note tables. This tool compares all meters at your tempo with groupings and bars per minute.
How do odd meters group?
5/4 often groups 3 plus 2, 7/8 as 2 plus 2 plus 3. The tool shows a common grouping, but pieces vary, so count your track.
How long is a bar at 120 BPM in 4/4?
Beat is 500 ms, times 4 beats is 2 seconds per bar, which is 30 bars per minute.
Does it set my metronome?
Yes. Send links your BPM to the metronome, where you pick the matching beats per bar.
Which meter should beginners learn first?
4/4 for pop and rock, 3/4 for waltz feel, then 6/8 for compound motion before odd meters.
